Metalwork, balustrades and gates in Morocco: steel standards, corrosion protection and checks

Metalwork in Moroccan buildings, such as balustrades, gates, grilles, canopies, steel stairs and light structures, draws on a set of mandatory product standards. Hot-rolled structural steel (NM EN 10025 series) and structural hollow sections (NM EN 10210 and NM EN 10219) require NM conformity, stainless steel follows NM EN 10088-1, and paint systems protecting steelwork follow NM ISO 12944-6 and NM 03.3.254. Glass balustrades need laminated safety glass under NM ISO 12543. The older guarding standards (NM 10.2.040 to 10.2.042) and the execution standard NM EN 1090 are homologated references for the CPS.

Scope

This page is about secondary steel and metal items installed in and around the building: stair and balcony balustrades, handrails, gates and fences, window grilles, canopies, metal stairs, mezzanines and composite steel decking. Heavy steel frames for industrial buildings need a structural design of their own.

Metalwork is designed with the architectural details, ordered after samples and shop drawings are approved, and installed once the supporting concrete and masonry are finished. Its anchors are checked at installation, and its coating at the final inspection before handover.

Who does what

PartyRole
ArchitectDesigns balustrades, gates and canopies, defines guarding heights with reference to the applicable standards and approves shop drawings and samples.
Structural engineering consultancy (BET)Checks anchors into concrete or masonry and the design of stairs, canopies and mezzanines.
Metalwork contractorFabricates from approved drawings with certified materials, welds and protects against corrosion, and installs with the specified anchors.
Glazing supplierProvides laminated glass of the specified composition and its marking for glass balustrades.
Client (owner)Approves finishes and colours, and keeps certificates and maintenance instructions for coatings and stainless steel.

Inspection milestones

  1. Architectural details and coordination of openings Good practice
Details of balustrades, anchors, stairs and canopies coordinated with slab edges and finishes before fabrication.
  2. Samples and finishes approved Specification (CPS) requirement
Railing sample or prototype, finish and colour approved in writing, with shop drawings signed off.
  3. Renders, screeds and joinery installed Specification (CPS) requirement
Anchors installed as specified, welds ground and protected, coating intact, glass marking checked, guarding firm when pushed.

Common non-conformities and follow-up

FindingAction
Balustrade fixed with ordinary plugs into hollow blocks.Remove and refix with the anchors the structural engineer specifies, into a solid support.
Rust spots appear soon after handover.Check the paint system and its thickness against the CPS; prepare the surface and repaint with the approved system.
Glass balustrade fitted with monolithic or toughened-only glass.Replace with laminated safety glass of the specified composition.
Steel delivered without a certificate or of an unknown grade.Quarantine the material until the certificate is produced, or replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Which steel products used in metalwork are mandatory in Morocco?

Hot-rolled structural steel (NM EN 10025 series), structural hollow sections (NM EN 10210 and 10219), stainless steels (NM EN 10088-1) and coated flat steel (NM EN 10346) are of mandatory application.

Is there a Moroccan standard for balustrades?

Yes, NM 10.2.040 to 10.2.042 deal with dimensions, strength and testing of guarding. They are homologated, so the CPS should cite them.

Must a glass balustrade use laminated glass?

Laminated safety glass under NM ISO 12543 is the product suited to guarding, because it stays in place if broken. The supplier justifies the composition.

How is corrosion protection specified?

The CPS states the exposure and the paint system; NM ISO 12944-6 and NM 03.3.254 are the mandatory standards that the products must meet.

Who checks the anchors of a railing?

The structural engineer specifies them and the architect checks installation; a railing must be fixed to a support able to hold it.
