Floor finishes in Morocco: tile and stone standards, accessibility and site checks

Floor finishes in Morocco sit under a short list of binding texts and a longer list of voluntary ones. Ceramic tiles must conform to NM ISO 13006, a mandatory standard in its current edition, and the cement used for screeds and bedding mortar to NM 10.1.004. Where the building must be accessible, Law 10-03 and its Decree 2-11-246 shape level changes and floor surfaces along accessible routes. Laying methods for bonded tiles, bedded floors, PVC and parquet are covered by homologated Moroccan standards that apply when the CPS cites them, which a good specification always does.

Scope

This page deals with internal and covered external floor finishes: porcelain and ceramic tiles, cement tiles and terrazzo, marble and granite, PVC and other resilient floors, nailed, glued or floating parquet, plus the screeds, adhesives, grouts and skirtings that go with them.

The package begins on a cured, level and dry slab or screed, after the services embedded in the floor have been tested, and closes with the floor protected until handover. Waterproofing of wet rooms and roof terraces belongs to the waterproofing package; wall tiling and zellige are handled under wall finishes.

Inspection milestones

  1. Samples and finishes approved Specification (CPS) requirement
Tile, stone or parquet sample signed off by the client, with the laying pattern and joint colour.
  2. Embedded services tested before closing up Specification (CPS) requirement
Pipes and conduits laid in the floor tested before the screed covers them.
Standards to check at this milestone: NM 06.6.071
  3. Floor and wall finishes, ceilings and painting Specification (CPS) requirement
Support dry and flat before laying, pattern respected, lippage and joints acceptable, falls towards floor drains working.
  4. Pre-handover inspection (OPR) Good practice
Hollow-sounding tiles, chips and stains listed during the pre-handover inspection, together with missing skirtings.

FindingAction
Tiles from two different shade batches mixed in the same room.Lifting and relaying with a single batch, or a written acceptance by the client if the difference is minor.
Hollow sound under several tiles when tapped.Removal of the loose tiles, cleaning, and relaying with the specified adhesive and full coverage.
Shower floor water running away from the drain.Removal of the finish and correction of the falls before the waterproofing and tiles are redone.
Parquet laid on a screed that was still damp.Moisture check, removal of affected boards, drying and relaying according to the laying standard cited in the CPS.

Frequently asked questions

Which floor tile standard is mandatory in Morocco?

NM ISO 13006 for ceramic tiles is mandatory. Laying standards for tiles, stone and parquet are homologated and apply through the specification.

Do accessibility rules affect my floors?

For buildings open to the public and collective housing, Law 10-03 and Decree 2-11-246 apply to accessible routes, so thresholds and changes of level must be planned at design stage.

What should I check on tile boxes at delivery?

The standard, the tile group, the shade and the batch. Mixing batches is the most common source of visible colour differences.

Can I lay tiles directly on an old floor?

Sometimes, if the existing floor is sound, flat and well bonded and the adhesive suits it. Your architect or contractor decides after testing the existing surface.

How much spare stock should I keep?

Keep at least a few boxes from the same batch. Ask your architect for a quantity based on the area and the pattern chosen.
